With the rising concern over food contamination not from outside pollutants, but rather from commonly used agricultural chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, various groups are now trying to spread adequate information regarding the use of such chemicals in food. One group in particular, the Pesticide Action Network, has created a website called What’s On My Food? that seeks to distill the complex information regarding these potential health threats in a way that consumers can quickly and readily understand. The group rallies for pesticide use reform and as a result, has decades of experience delivering such information to consumers.
The What’s On My Food? app will make use of toxicology information from a wide network of databases and pull from those in order to deliver information directly to the app’s users. Information such as which pesticides are on each kind of food, in what amount and, in a ground breaking move, information on what health concerns those particular chemicals are tied to in human beings according to current scientific research. So far over 80 different foods are listed, but the group hopes to expand its listings in the near future for this free app so that consumers can make decisions before they purchase foods rather than after preparation.
