O2, UK’s iPhone carrier, had recently hoped to deflect some of the expected demand for Apple’s new 3G iPhone which is scheduled to launch tomorrow, by taking preorders for the phone. It sent out text messages to its existing customers Monday morning letting informing them that they had the opportunity to upgrade to the new iPhone model. However, the overwhelming response to the announcement forced O2 to halt the upgrade process only minutes after it began. Customers were told that their new iPhones would be delivered by courier on Friday morning and could be activated at home, a curious fact since there is a strict in-store activation policy in place for the US launch.
