The iPhone-dev team has recently released pwnageTool, software that jailbreaks iPhones with firmware 2.0 such as the iPhone 3G. It allows various programs to be installed without having to use Apple’s App Store. PwnageTool 2.0 lets iPhone users run applications not approved by Apple (Such as applications from third parties and the open source community) on both the new generation of iPhones and original iPhones that have been upgraded. As it stands, there is no SIM lock hack available for the current base-band firmware that would help remove the requirement to use a particular phone carrier such as O2 or AT&T. However the iPhone 3G can only be obtained in most countries such as the UK and the US with a contract at purchase, so a SIM lock hack isn’t particularly useful.
